League of Legends 2027: VCS opens wider doors, Vietnamese teams gain more paths to international competition

The moment that caught my attention in Riot Games' new announcement was not the 500,000 peak viewers figure at the 2026 Mid-Season Finals, nor the statement that LCP remains the highest-level competition in the Asia-Pacific region. It was a sentence in the format section: starting in 2027, teams from VCS, PCS, and LJL will be able to compete for LCP slots on a stage-by-stage basis throughout the year, instead of waiting for a single Promotion Series. For a Vietnamese team hungry to reach the international stage, that sentence is worth more than any blockbuster contract.

The context needs to be clear: LCP, full name League of Legends Championship Pacific, is Riot Games' top-tier tournament gathering the strongest teams in the Asia-Pacific region. The ecosystem around LCP includes three main domestic leagues: PCS, VCS, and LJL. In the first two years, Riot designed LCP as a centralized model: for most of the season, teams had to set up camp and compete in Taipei. That model created a shared practice environment, but it also raised operating costs and separated players from their families, fans, and home communities. The promotion door for domestic teams was also narrow in frequency: exactly one Promotion Series per year, with a limited number of participating teams. In plain terms, a team had only a few matches each year to decide its entire fate.

Riot Games recognized the problem. Instead of continuing to pour money into the old model, they chose to change the structure. The new announcement describes a more open system in which all teams in the three domestic leagues have the right to compete for LCP slots. This not only increases the number of eligible teams but also increases how often the door opens within a year. If a team misses the chance in the first stage, they still have another opportunity later. For VCS teams, this mechanism creates a continuous ladder to prove their ability, rather than betting everything on one decisive match.

The reform also includes two organizational and financial pillars. First, reduced travel burden: teams compete at home before each LCP stage, instead of staying in Taipei for long stretches. Operating costs drop, players are not cut off from their daily rhythm, and teams have more time to build rosters at home. Second, GRP revenue is split into two tiers. Existing LCP teams continue to receive Regional GRP. When they qualify for international events, they receive additional Global Event GRP. Riot stressed that team revenue will depend increasingly on competitive performance, rather than being distributed equally as a flat support mechanism.

The key insight is this: Riot is shifting from a model that keeps familiar teams inside LCP to an escalator model, where stage-by-stage performance in domestic leagues determines which team earns an LCP berth and a chance to go further. Viewers will see a domestic season that truly matters at every stage, not a league that only heats up in the final weeks.

From a regional perspective, keeping the Wild Card path shows that Riot still values representation across multiple communities rather than pursuing a purely merit-based concentration. In an APAC region with diverse gaming cultures, representative diversity may slow down convergence, but it makes the ecosystem more sustainable in the long run.

Now comes the hard-to-swallow part. Opening doors does not mean raising the competitive ceiling. APAC still sits below LCK and LPL. LCP remains the highest-level competition in the Asia-Pacific region, but this region's standing compared to Korea and China will not change simply because the promotion system is broadened. VCS teams have more chances to reach LCP and a clearer path to international events, but opportunity and strength are two different things.

Weaker teams will fall behind relatively. In a league where the number of slots has not been finalized, teams may face prolonged uncertainty. For non-incumbent LCP teams, heavy long-term investment in rosters becomes risky if promotion slots keep rotating every stage.
