MOJI Officially Launches Liga Voli Mahasiswa 2026: 36 Teams, 3 Cities and a Media Gamble

On September 25, 2026, in Jakarta, the organizers of Liga Voli Mahasiswa (LVM) 2026 held the group draw. Twelve days later, on October 7, 2026, the first ball will be served in Yogyakarta. Between those two markers there are only twelve days. For a national competition being staged across three cities for the very first time, that preparation window is short enough to reveal almost the entire character of the event: a media product assembled quickly, cleanly, and on schedule.

The press room is not silent; there is simply no one who has yet asked the question that matters most. That question is not which team will win, but: what makes a sports media platform decide to organize a university volleyball competition itself, rather than simply buying rights and broadcasting one?

Liga Voli Mahasiswa 2026 is the first university volleyball competition organized and streamed by an Indonesian media platform itself (MOJI, part of the Emtek group) on its OTT platform VIDIO, bringing together 36 teams from 24 universities across 60 matches in three cities, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Jakarta, from October 7 to October 31, 2026.

That is the entire skeleton. The flesh lies in the details a standard press release would glide past.

The format is laid out clearly: each host city fields six men's teams and six women's teams, split into two pools of three, playing round-robin within each city series. Three cities multiplied by twenty matches each yields sixty, spread across fifteen official competition days, meaning four matches per day at each venue. A tidy schedule, verifiable by simple arithmetic, and one that also shows each team plays only a very modest number of matches, characteristic of a platform prioritizing reach and exposure over competitive depth.

The most operationally revealing detail is the scheduling itself. In Jakarta, matches are set for 11:00, 13:00, 15:00 and 17:00 Western Indonesian Time. In Yogyakarta and Surabaya, the standard window is 13:00 to 19:00. Jakarta starting two hours earlier reflects a rarely stated reality: GOR Pertamina Simprug shares its calendar with other activities, and the organizers had to bend the schedule around available slots rather than around prime broadcast hours.

The list of 24 universities ranges from established sports institutions such as UNESA and the Yogyakarta school cluster to many with no volleyball pedigree. Dispersed quality is near-certain, yet no seeding, historical ranking or strength-classification criteria were published. That means the draw was likely random or regional, and competitive balance across pools is a complete unknown.

The prize structure tells a clearer story than any statement. Total prize money per sector across the top four places is 10 million, 7.5 million, 5 million and 2.5 million rupiah, totaling 25 million rupiah. That is roughly USD 1,550 per sector, about USD 3,100 across both, with the champion receiving less than USD 620. In Indonesian sport this money has its own name: uang pembinaan, development money, not competition prize money. That naming is the essence of the event: it is a training grant wearing the clothes of a tournament, not a tournament with a prize.

At the core sits a specific national-team position. The prize structure and the format matter less than the operating model: a media group that produces the content, owns the product, and controls distribution. In Southeast Asia, volleyball is rarely run this way. When the organizer is also the streaming platform, value no longer leaks out of the chain.

The risk sits in the unmentioned places. First, sustainability: this is a debut season with no commitment for 2027. Second, a mismatch between expectation and incentive. Third, the relationship with the national federation PBVSI is nowhere stated, and player eligibility for a 24-university event remains unanswered. Fourth, the twelve-day runway from draw to first whistle.

A grassroots competition with under USD 620 for the champion does not change a nation's volleyball in one season. But the right operating model can. The remaining question is simply who will step forward to answer once the first whistle sounds on October 7.
